An organising question

Peat began investigating progesterone and related hormones in 1968, completing a biology doctorate at the University of Oregon in 1972. In his account, the central question was how energy and structure depend on one another.

He developed this perspective through teaching, independent writing and a wide reading of physiology.

1970s onward

A conversation across generations

Peat read earlier research closely, returning to Warburg, Szent-Györgyi and Ling as he developed his own interpretations of metabolism and cellular organisation.

The connections in this thread are a history of reading and ideas. They do not imply that the four researchers shared one theory or reached the same conclusions.

More than a nutritional doctrine

Generative Energy and Mind and Tissue place biology beside questions of wholeness, the brain and perception. His essays also turn to William Blake, intuition and the conditions under which people learn.

The most rewarding way into this work is to follow its references and questions. His nutritional and hormonal arguments vary in evidential support; a compelling biological story does not by itself establish a treatment.

A reading life left open

Peat died in 2022. His books, article archive and recorded conversations remain paths into an unusually wide-ranging body of thought.

Read an essay, follow a cited experiment, and compare the accounts. His writing on discovery provides a fitting invitation to keep understanding provisional.
