A maker of tools that put imagination within reach. From pixels and paint to linked stacks of cards, he helped people turn a computer into a medium of their own.

Atkinson left graduate research in neuroscience to join Apple in 1978. Jef Raskin encouraged the visit; Steve Jobs persuaded him that he could help shape what computers would become.
His work on Lisa helped give its interface a practical visual language. The mouse, menus and a paper-like screen offered people something they could act on directly.
QuickDraw supplied the graphics machinery behind the Macintosh. MacPaint brought that machinery into the hands of someone with an image to make: brushes, patterns, a paint bucket and a selection lasso.
Atkinson learned by watching Susan Kare use early versions. The result joined technical ingenuity with careful attention to the person drawing. Small details made a new activity feel approachable.
HyperCard let people assemble text, pictures, buttons and links into interactive stacks. Dan Winkler’s HyperTalk gave those objects behaviour through a comparatively approachable scripting language.
Here the thread becomes tangible: a person could organise a subject, connect its parts and build a small world for someone else to explore. HyperCard made authoring an everyday possibility.
In 1990, Atkinson co-founded General Magic with Marc Porat and Andy Hertzfeld. He also pursued nature photography, bringing close attention to colour and the craft of printing.
Within the Stone reveals intricate landscapes in polished rock. Atkinson died on 5 June 2025; his software and photographs leave two routes into a life spent making things visible.
