Born in France in 1881, Teilhard became both a Jesuit and a researcher in geology and palaeontology. Scientific fieldwork and religious reflection remained intertwined in his life.
His questions reached across scales: the history preserved in the earth, the emergence of life, and the place of human consciousness within that history.
In The Formation of the Noösphere, Teilhard describes collective human thought as an emerging planetary layer. His language moves between biology and a theological account of human destiny.
The essay provides a provocative way to think about interconnection. It should be read as Teilhard’s philosophical synthesis; a network of computers is only one possible comparison, not the definition of his idea.
Teilhard died in New York in 1955. The Phenomenon of Man appeared in French that year, bringing his broad account of evolution and consciousness to readers after his death.
His presence in this thread is conceptual: he invites a question about collective thought. Wells, Bush and later computing researchers give that question quite different forms.
