1895–1927

An experiment begins

Born in Milton, Massachusetts, Fuller passed through Harvard, naval service, construction and business failure. The death of his young daughter and a later personal crisis became turning points in his own account.

In 1927 he began what he called an experiment to discover what one individual could do on behalf of humanity.

1927–1946

Dymaxion

His lightweight house, transport studies and Dymaxion map treated shelter and mobility as systems of resources, energy and production.

Many proposals remained prototypes. Their force lay in shifting the question from style to total performance.

1948–1959

The dome

Teaching at Black Mountain College helped bring geometric investigations into physical form. Geodesic domes distributed stress through triangular networks and enclosed large volumes with little material.

Students and colleagues helped turn geometry into structures. Fuller worked with designers including Shoji Sadao, Don Richter and Jeffrey Lindsay; the familiar dome emerged from sustained experiments as well as an individual vision.

1976–1983

Critical path

Late books gathered decades of proposals into an urgent case that knowledge could raise living standards without making scarcity the organizing principle.

Fuller died in 1983, leaving designs, patents, lectures and a language that still provokes—even where its claims demand testing.
