Born in Bloemfontein and raised near Birmingham, Tolkien developed an early love of languages. At Oxford he studied English, then served on the Somme, where illness removed him from the front and several close friends were killed.
While recovering, Tolkien began stories and invented languages that would grow into the legendarium. Academic work at Leeds and Oxford placed Old and Middle English, Old Norse and textual history at the centre of his professional life.
The Hobbit began as a story for his children and became a publishing success. Its lighter adventure opened onto a mythology already accumulating behind it.
The Lord of the Rings enlarged the children’s tale into an epic of power, pity, friendship and loss. Tolkien’s languages and chronologies give the story depth, but its emotional force lies in the burdens carried by ordinary people.
Tolkien died in 1973. Christopher Tolkien edited The Silmarillion and decades of further manuscripts, allowing readers to see both the mythology and the restless process by which his father remade it.
