Born in Modesto, California, Lucas discovered filmmaking at USC and moved from student experiments to THX 1138.
Its difficult release sharpened his determination to control how his work was made and presented.
He incorporated Lucasfilm in 1971. American Graffiti became its first production and gave him the means to pursue a space fantasy.
Star Wars required new teams for visual effects and sound. Industrial Light & Magic and the group that became Skywalker Sound grew from that practical need.
Lucas stepped away from directing while originating stories and executive-producing films made by major collaborators, including Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand and Steven Spielberg.
The credits matter: these worlds bear Lucas’s creative architecture, and their films are collective achievements.
Lucas returned to writing and directing for the Star Wars prequel trilogy, using digital production to expand what could be photographed, edited and exhibited.
The work accelerated an industry-wide shift while preserving the saga’s concern with power, fear and choice.
Lucas recruited Kathleen Kennedy as Lucasfilm president, retired and sold the company to Disney in 2012.
The institutions remained: Lucasfilm, ILM and Skywalker Sound continue as communities of artists and engineers rather than monuments to a solitary auteur.
