Born in New York, Postman studied at SUNY Fredonia and Teachers College, Columbia. His early work in English education already treated language as an environment shaping what learners could perceive.
With Charles Weingartner, Teaching as a Subversive Activity argued for question-making and resistance to obsolete certainties. At NYU he founded the graduate program in media ecology.
The Disappearance of Childhood linked childhood to print culture; Amusing Ourselves to Death contrasted typographic argument with television’s demand for entertainment. The historical claims invite dispute, but the diagnostic questions remain potent.
Technopoly described a culture surrendering judgment to technical calculation. Postman continued to defend education as a coherent moral and civic undertaking until his death in 2003.
