Born in Vienna to a multilingual family, Illich studied theology and philosophy, became a Catholic priest, and worked in a Puerto Rican parish in New York before serving as vice-rector of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico.
In Cuernavaca he helped found CIDOC, a centre for language learning and critical study of development. Conflict with Church authorities grew from his opposition to paternalistic missionary and development programs.
Deschooling Society, Tools for Conviviality and Medical Nemesis argued that professional institutions can monopolise needs and produce dependence. His target was a scale and structure of provision, not learning, tools or care themselves.
Later work with collaborators examined gender, literacy, text and the history of the senses. Illich taught internationally and continued conversations on technology, friendship and limits until his death in Bremen.
