Born in Vienna and raised in England, Alexander studied mathematics and architecture at Cambridge, then completed a Harvard doctorate. Moving to Berkeley, he began seeking rigorous ways to represent design problems without separating them from human experience.
Notes on the Synthesis of Form explored fit between form and context. The Oregon Experiment, A Pattern Language and The Timeless Way of Building shifted the emphasis toward shared patterns and processes through which users could shape places.
Through the Center for Environmental Structure, Alexander and collaborators tested their ideas in housing, campuses and public buildings. Construction itself became a way to discover and correct form.
The four-volume Nature of Order proposed living structure as a property of arrangements whose centres reinforce one another. Its reach into software was significant, though software “design patterns” transformed his architectural idea for a different medium.
