Born in Kesswil, Switzerland, Jung studied medicine at Basel and joined the Burghölzli hospital under Eugen Bleuler. Experiments with word association led him toward emotionally charged complexes.
Jung’s intense collaboration with Freud made him an international figure in psychoanalysis. Their disagreement over libido, religion and the scope of the unconscious ended the alliance and forced Jung toward an independent psychology.
During years of inner upheaval Jung recorded dreams, fantasies, paintings and dialogues later associated with The Red Book. Psychological Types turned that period toward a theory of differing attitudes and functions.
Travel, clinical practice and study of alchemy, religion and myth fed his accounts of archetypes, synchronicity and individuation. His cultural generalisations and institutional conduct remain subjects of historical debate alongside his enduring clinical influence.
