1953–1982

Northampton and British comics

Born and still based in Northampton, Moore moved from underground cartoons into scripts for 2000 AD, Doctor Who Weekly and Warrior. The Ballad of Halo Jones and V for Vendetta showed his early range.

1983–1987

American genres become laboratories

Saga of the Swamp Thing treated horror comics as ecological and philosophical fiction. Watchmen, made with Dave Gibbons, used symmetry, recurring images and supplementary documents to interrogate the superhero and Cold War power.

1988–2006

History under the picture

From Hell, with Eddie Campbell, made Victorian London a network of class, architecture, violence and interpretation. Promethea and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen pushed comics toward magic, literary collage and formal experiment.

1996–present

The novel, the city and magic

Voice of the Fire and Jerusalem place Northampton inside deep time. Moore’s performance and writing treat magic as an art of language and consciousness; his public disputes with publishers and adaptations also centre authorship and control.
