Dumas was born at Villers-Cotterêts. His father, General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was the son of an enslaved Black woman from Saint-Domingue and a French nobleman; his rise and fall left the family both a heroic memory and financial hardship.
Henri III et sa cour made Dumas a leading figure in French Romantic theatre. The July Revolution confirmed his appetite for public action as well as theatrical spectacle.
Georges, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo transformed historical material into propulsive serial fiction. Dumas worked openly with collaborators—most famously Auguste Maquet—within the commercial system of the feuilleton.
At the height of his fame Dumas opened the Théâtre-Historique and built the Château de Monte-Cristo. Both embodied his extravagant belief that stories should become worlds people could enter; both also deepened his debts.
Dumas died in 1870 after a career spanning plays, novels, travel writing, journalism and memoir. In 2002 France transferred his remains to the Panthéon, publicly recognising a writer long loved beyond the boundaries of the literary canon.
