1966–1989

A prize and a weekly debut

Born in Yamagata Prefecture, Togashi began drawing manga early and received the Tezuka Award for new artists before entering Weekly Shonen Jump.

1990–1994

The afterlife becomes a tournament

YuYu Hakusho moved from occult detective stories into battles without losing its concern for loyalty, exhaustion and the unstable border between human and demon.

1995–1997

Level E changes the frequency

Level E traded heroic escalation for science-fiction misdirection and dark comedy, proving how readily Togashi could change tone and structure.

1998–

Hunter × Hunter

Hunter × Hunter continually rebuilds itself around examinations, auctions, games, ecological catastrophe and succession politics. Its Nen system turns declared limitations into dramatic leverage.

2006–

Making around chronic pain

Togashi has documented severe back pain and the practical limits it places on drawing. Publication has proceeded in irregular periods; the work’s pace should not be confused with a lack of commitment.
