The insect collector

Growing up in Machida, Tajiri explored fields and streams collecting insects. As development replaced those habitats, arcades became another territory to study closely.

1983–1988

Game Freak, the magazine

Tajiri began Game Freak as a self-published game magazine. Illustrator Ken Sugimori joined after finding a copy; criticism gradually became game-making.

1989

A studio and its first game

Game Freak became a development company. Quinty, released internationally as Mendel Palace, established Tajiri as a director and designer working with a team.

1990–1996

Creatures across a cable

Seeing the Game Boy link cable suggested creatures moving between machines. Pokémon took years of iteration with Nintendo and producer Tsunekazu Ishihara before Red and Green launched in Japan.

1996–

A world larger than one creator

Tajiri created and directed the original concept while Sugimori, programmers, composers, producers and later generations developed its form. As Game Freak’s president, he became a comparatively private custodian of the company.
