Cartographer of Elsewhere
Jean Giraud drew one frontier as Gir and another as Mœbius: open deserts, impossible cities and dream worlds whose quiet line changed comics and cinema.

Born near Paris, Giraud studied applied arts, travelled in Mexico and entered French comics through western illustration and apprenticeship.
With writer Jean-Michel Charlier he created Blueberry, drawing the western under the name Gir. The series’ authorship was collaborative; Giraud later continued it after Charlier’s death.
Co-founding Les Humanoïdes Associés and Métal Hurlant gave Mœbius room for Arzach and The Airtight Garage—works where atmosphere and metamorphosis could outrun conventional plot.
With writer Alejandro Jodorowsky he created The Incal. His concept work also touched films including Alien and Tron; those credits belong within large production teams.
Later works moved between commercial characters, exhibitions and the self-reflexive Inside Mœbius. He died in Paris in 2012, leaving two signatures that had long since begun conversing.
