Born in Gloucestershire and raised in Virginia, McAfee studied mathematics and worked in computing and aerospace. He later described long struggles with alcohol and drugs; accounts of this period rely substantially on his own recollections.
After encountering the Brain virus, McAfee founded McAfee Associates and distributed antivirus tools to build a commercial market. He left the company in 1994 and later sold his remaining stake; the later McAfee corporation should not be treated as his continuing work.
Tribal Voice developed PowWow, an early internet chat client. Other ventures ranged across messaging, yoga, aviation and technology, with uneven commercial results.
In Belize, police sought McAfee for questioning—not as a charged suspect—after the 2012 killing of neighbor Gregory Faull; McAfee denied involvement and left the country. In 2020 U.S. prosecutors charged him with tax evasion, and a separate federal indictment later alleged cryptocurrency fraud. He died before trial, so those charges were never adjudicated.
McAfee was found dead in a Spanish prison on 23 June 2021, after a court authorized extradition. Spanish authorities ruled the death suicide; in 2023 a court rejected the family’s final appeal to reopen the investigation. Claims of murder remain unsupported by the official investigation.
