1960–1983

Tokusatsu, manga and motion

Born in Ube, Anno grew up absorbed by animation, manga, military hardware and special-effects films. His DAICON convention animation revealed an unusual command of mechanical motion.

1984–1989

Animating catastrophe

He contributed key animation to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and co-founded Gainax, then directed Gunbuster, joining spectacle to abrupt shifts in time and emotion.

1990–1996

Nadia to Evangelion

After Nadia, Anno created and directed Neon Genesis Evangelion. Budget, schedule and personal crisis shaped a television ending that turned inward rather than hiding its production conditions.

1997–2006

Bodies in live action

The End of Evangelion offered another ending. Love & Pop, Ritual and Cutie Honey carried his graphic cutting and interest in unstable identity into live action.

2006–

Khara and rebuilding

Anno founded Khara in 2006 and remade Evangelion across four films, concluding with Thrice Upon a Time. Shin Godzilla and Shin Kamen Rider revisit inherited popular forms through present institutions and anxieties.
