1983–1996

Thirteen years at Microsoft

Newell worked on early Windows releases before leaving with Mike Harrington.

1996–1998

Newell and Harrington co-founded Valve; its broad first team created Half-Life.

2003–2011

Valve launched Steam for updates and distribution, then expanded it into a third-party PC marketplace.

2012–present

Under Newell’s leadership Valve pursued Linux gaming, SteamOS, virtual reality and Steam Deck.
