A cartoonist whose elastic line made comedy, combat, machines and monsters feel weightless—and whose characters crossed from manga into games and global culture.
Manga Artist & Character Designer
Born in Aichi Prefecture, Toriyama loved pictures, vehicles and films, worked briefly in commercial design, then submitted manga to contests. Rejection sharpened the economy of his page design.
Dr. Slump joined slapstick, science fiction and meticulously silly machines. Its success established Toriyama’s comic timing and led to a major television adaptation.
Dragon Ball began as a compact adventure inspired partly by Journey to the West and expanded into a long martial-arts epic. Toriyama wrote and drew the original manga; animation studios and many other creators built its screen afterlife.
For Dragon Quest he supplied character and monster designs; Chrono Trigger united his visual language with a collaborative game team. These credits concern design, not sole authorship of the games.
Toriyama continued with works including Sand Land and Jaco while contributing designs to games and Dragon Ball projects. He died on 1 March 2024 from an acute subdural hematoma; Bird Studio announced his death a week later.
